Minister for Foreign Affairs, Okudzeto Ablakwa Claps Back at U.S. Senate Over Debt Comments.

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has issued a scathing response to the United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee following recent remarks criticizing Ghana’s debt repayment priorities.
In a strongly worded post on social media, the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee suggested that Ghana's foreign minister should prioritize repaying debts owed to U.S. companies and taxpayers instead of traveling to Washington, D.C. According to the post, “We cannot keep subsidizing Ghana while it continues paying far larger debts to China.”
But the comments did not sit well with Ghanaian lawmaker and Foreign Affairs Minister, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, who fired back by defending Ghana’s sovereignty and demanding mutual respect in international relations. He accused the U.S. of hypocrisy, particularly in its lack of commitment to reparations for its historical role in the transatlantic slave trade.
“This is very rich coming from someone who refuses to engage in same advocacy for the payment of reparations by the US for its despicable and condemnable role in slavery,” Ablakwa wrote.
Reasserting Ghana’s independence and historical legacy, Ablakwa continued:
“You will not be allowed to dictate to a sovereign country on how we conduct our foreign policy if you need to be reminded this is Kwame Nkrumah's Ghana the first African nation to defeat colonialism and imperialism.”
The minister further clarified that while Ghana remains committed to meeting its financial obligations, such commitments will be honored through a carefully planned economic recovery program. “Those measly debts compared to what you owe us in reparations would be paid when we deem appropriate,” he stated, adding that the debt in question was not incurred under the current Mahama-led administration.
He concluded with a sharp jab, declaring: “Unlike you, we take responsibility and honour our national obligations.”
The diplomatic exchange comes at a time of increased scrutiny over Africa’s financial relations with global powers, especially amid mounting international debt and shifting geopolitical alliances. Ghana, like many African nations, has borrowed from both Western and Eastern blocs, including the U.S. and China, to finance infrastructure and development projects.
Ablakwa’s bold response has garnered attention both locally and internationally, with many Ghanaians applauding his unapologetic defense of the country’s dignity and sovereignty. The incident is likely to spark further debate on the broader issue of neocolonialism, global debt dynamics, and the long-standing calls for reparative justice.
