DAMONGO TEACHER ON SUICIDE WATCH AFTER LOSING OVER GHS400,000 IN FOREX TRADING
A professional teacher in Damongo is currently battling severe mental distress and contemplating suicide after losing close to GHS400,000 in a failed forex trading venture.
The educator, who has chosen to remain anonymous, told local media that his journey into online forex trading began three to four years ago with significant profits, which lured him into investing heavily. Encouraged by early gains, he poured more money into the trade, but things quickly spiraled out of control when the market turned against him.
“I thought I had discovered a way to supplement my income and eventually achieve financial freedom,” he said, his voice trembling with regret. “I was winning at first, but then I began losing everything. I believed I could recover if I invested more.”
Desperate to recover his losses, the teacher began liquidating his assets. He sold off stock from his once-thriving electrical shop, gave the shop out for rent, and reinvested all the proceeds into forex trading. Sadly, those investments also went down the drain.
What followed was a downward spiral. He sold his personal belongings, borrowed from friends, and even sold a piece of family land a decision that has now strained his relationship with his family. His parents, upon discovering the sale of the land, reacted with anger and disappointment, leaving him feeling isolated and hopeless.
“I was once someone who helped others , I supported needy students, ran a successful business. Now I have nothing,” he lamented. “I’ve become the talk of the town. My parents don’t even want to see me. Sometimes, I ask myself if there’s any point in living.”
Community members have expressed shock at the teacher’s revelation. Many described him as a kind-hearted and diligent professional who was passionate about youth development and education.
Mental health advocates are calling for immediate intervention. “This is a clear cry for help,” said a psychologist based in the region. “We urge the Ghana Education Service and local authorities to step in and ensure he receives the counseling and support he needs.”
This tragic situation brings to light the increasing number of Ghanaians turning to high-risk investment schemes, often without adequate knowledge or risk management strategies. It also underscores the urgent need for financial literacy campaigns and stronger mental health support systems, especially for professionals under economic pressure.
If you or someone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts, please contact the Mental Health Authority’s helpline or seek help from a qualified health professional. There is hope, and help is available.
