Yaw Sarpong narrates how he met Tiwaa
Veteran Gospel Musician, Yaw Sarpong, has narrated how he met the lead female vocalist of the Asomafo Band group, Maame Tiwaa.
Although the two have been working closely together for over 39 years, little is known about how they met.
In an interview with Kaakyire Ofori Ayim, host of Atinka FM’s AM Drive, Veteran Gospel Musician, Yaw Sarpong, said he met Maame Tiwaa in 1978 during the early stages of his career at a funeral he attended with Professor Kofi Abraham.
According to the “Wo Haw Ne Sen” hitmaker, Tiwaa had also come with a Methodist band to perform at the funeral.
He hinted that the melodious voice of Maame Tiwaa attracted him.
“When I finally decided to set up Yaw Sarpong and the Asomafo Band, I set out to look for Tiwaa. I got to know that her band had collapsed and that she had gone back to her village. I was given directions to her village and because I was bent on adding her to my band, I went there. I got to her village only to be told she had gone to the farm. I waited for four hours until she returned. I told her my reasons but she was adamant, she said she didn’t want to pursue music again. I had to encourage her. I gave her money to come to Kumasi the next day and that was the beginning of our journey”, Yaw Sarpong told Kaakyire Ofori Ayim.
Yaw Sarpong maintained that they have been able to stick together because they understand each other.
Yaw Sarpong is an integral part of the growth of gospel music in the Ghana and has over 26 music albums and over 100 songs to his credit.
